NPP’s member criticized Bagbin’s leadership as “rancorous” and “untouchable”

The ongoing controversy surrounding the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has taken a new turn. Saaka Salia, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team spoke out against speaker Bagbin’s leadership style, labeling him of being “untouchable” and having a “rancorous nature” that is detrimental to Ghana’s progress.

Speaking on the GTV breakfast show, Salia noted that Bagbin’s vindictive behaviour and inflated sense of self-importance have created chaos in parliament. He pointed out that Ghana has had more distinguished speakers in the past, such as Doe Adjaho and Justice D.F. Annan, who demonstrated a more sober and inclusive approach to leadership.

Salia also suggested that Bagbin’s actions in the house are motivated by a desire for reappointment into office. He emphasized that democracy requires collaboration and humility, qualities that Bagbin allegedly lacks.

When asked about his ideal candidate for the speaker position, Salia expressed admiration for Doe Adjaho, citing his competence and ability to bring people together. He noted that Adjaho’s single term as speaker demonstrated his commitment to serving the nation without seeking to entrench himself in power.

The controversy surrounding Bagbin’s leadership comes against the backdrop of increasing tensions between the ruling NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP has been critical of Bagbin’s handling of parliamentary proceedings, while the NDC has defended his actions as a necessary check on the executive branch.
